Class imbalances: should we play Order?

I’ve always been a big fan of playing the underdog realm. Mind you, not too
underdog. Playing on Mid-Pellinor was rough in DAoC when Mid was only 15 percent of the three-realm server. But according to a poll by the Warhammer Alliance, there is roughly a 60-40 split of Destruction vs. Order. Thegreenskin.com analyzes the results here.

I can’t say I’m surprised. Most PVPers seem to want to play an uncharismatic race:

They’re also marketing their game as RvR and most recently, “hardcore.” A game like this is naturally going to appeal more to the people who traditionally play “evil” races in other MMORPGs. In World of Warcraft, it’s no mystery that Horde players fancied PvP more than Alliance.

So keep an Order class in mind, folks. We don’t want to be roaming in RVR looking for a fight all day because other groups get to the bad guys first. I’d personally rather play the underdog, even if I have to look cute to do it.

They should make those dark elves uglier if this poll proves to be accurate; then I’m sure the populations will even out. Or make the Dwarf Engineer (”Represent!”) radically overpowered. Now that I think about it, I prefer the second option. =P

Thanks for the post Adam. I completely agree. The only reason Warcraft Horde had such a population imbalance to begin with is because there weren’t any hot chicks to play. Of course now it has Blood Elves, but that wasn’t the case for the first two years of gameplay.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

I’ll give you a sneak peak at the final part of my new analysis (to be posted soon):

Playing TheoryHammer is fun, but it’s also good to play by the rules. Based on proper opinion polling methods, you can not accurately determine WAR’s population landscape using these results. The only reason I’m even remotely worried about the potential for population imbalance is that I’m torn between two feelings as a gamer: 1) I desperately want to play Destruction (Goblin Shaman) but 2) I would never, ever, in a million years, want to play in the most populated realm. It may sound elitist, but I’d much rather be the underdog instead of another wasp in the swarm. There’s just no challenge in that…

If anything, I hope Order overwhelms Destruction or the balance is close to 1:1. That’s my ideal scenario at launch.
